Afghan, Pakistani presidents call Holbrooke

President Barack Obama admired an ailing Richard Holbrooke Monday for making America safer, as the veteran civil servant recovered from surgery to mend a tear in the large blood vessel that moves blood from his heart.

Holbrooke, 69, underwent additional events Sunday to improve movement, but remained in critical situation at George Washington University Hospital.

"He is just one of the giants of American new policy," Obama said Monday throughout a holiday welcome at the State Department.

Obama met for a split second with Holbrooke's family previous to his remarks, and said he offered prayers for Holbrooke's revival.
